Ambassador and head of Yemen’s permanent delegation to the Paris-based UNESCO, Ahmed al-Sayyad, told Al Jazeera Arabic Channel that Saudi-UAE synergy, in wake of row over troop deployment to Socotra, has a hidden inclination to divide Yemen.

“It’s time to sit down with the Saudi-led coalition and find out what they want in Yemen,” Al-Sayyad said.

Socotra island, located near Somalia in the Gulf of Aden, is protected by the United Nations cultural agency UNESCO as a world heritage site, meaning that even the Yemeni government is not allowed to interfere in the natural habitats and places of natural beauty in the area.

“We will send an international delegation to Socotra before it turns into a threatened heritage,” al-Sayyad said as Emirati forces seized all vital institutions there.

Saudi Arabia has deployed troops to Yemen’s Socotra after the UAE deployed 300 soldiers, along with tanks and artillery.

While Saudi Arabia and UAE forces have squared up against each other in the past and clashed in Aden, they would carry out along with Saudi-paid mercenaries joint training exercises in Socotra.

Saudi Arabia and the UAE have been waging a deadly war on Yemen since March 2015 in a move that revealed the falsity of their claims that they came to Yemen in order to restore the so-called legitimacy.
