Iran’s ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations, Amir Saeed Irvani, criticized the UN Security Council for holding a meeting on the situation in the Middle East at the request of Bahrain, stressing the need for the Security Council to refrain from provocative actions that could undermine diplomacy or increase escalation.
According to the official Iranian news agency, Irvani said at the meeting on Thursday that “the priority should be the full implementation of the memorandum of understanding between Iran and America, and the continuation of negotiations to reach a comprehensive agreement. The Security Council must support this path and encourage full compliance with the memorandum of understanding, and avoid provocative actions that could undermine diplomacy or lead to further escalation.”
He stressed that, in the circumstances where technical talks, facilitated by Pakistani and Qatari mediators, are focused on implementing the Islamabad Memorandum of Understanding, the Security Council is expected to refrain from holding a meeting that risks undermining these ongoing efforts.
Iran’s ambassador to the international organization rejected the baseless accusations raised by the United States of America.
He said that the US representative once again desperately tried to justify the aggressive and illegal actions by resorting to lies and spreading them against Iran.
He added: “The facts are clear. In the midst of diplomatic negotiations, the United States and the Israeli entity betrayed diplomacy twice, and launched two wars of aggression against Iran, which is a flagrant violation of the UN Charter and international law. These violations constitute a serious threat to international peace and security.”
Irwani also rejected “the baseless accusations raised by some Western members of the Security Council and the Bahraini representative.”
He said that instead of addressing the root causes of the current crisis, they ignored the illegal aggression against Iran, remained silent about these serious violations, and tried to blame the victim, stressing that “their double standards and hypocritical behavior have stripped them of any credibility to preach to others.”
