Yemeni student dies in German custody after arrest over pro-Gaza protest
Grief has engulfed the family of Yemeni student Ali Abdulghani Al-Maghribi after they were informed of his death in Germany following several months in detention.
The incident has sparked shock and raised questions among his relatives, friends, and residents of his hometown.
According to his family, Al-Maghribi had traveled to Germany to continue his studies and was known for his ambition and dedication.
The family said he was arrested after taking part in a pro- Gaza demonstration. He remained in custody for nearly seven months before authorities informed them of his death.
The official cause of death has not yet been disclosed, prompting calls from activists and members of the public for a transparent investigation.
Critics have also accused Western governments of applying double standards on issues of human rights and freedom of expression, particularly regarding solidarity with Gaza.
Family sources said Al-Maghribi’s parents traveled abroad after completing lengthy procedures to receive their son’s body. His remains are expected to be transferred to Sana’a for burial in the cemetery near his family’s home in the Naqm area.
The incident has sparked widespread reaction across Yemenis on social media, with many demanding German authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding his detention and death. They stressed that solidarity with Gaza should not be treated as a crime.
