Union of Gaza Municipalities: Diesel shortage threatens basic services

The Union of Municipalities in the Gaza Strip warned on Thursday of a dangerous escalation in the diesel shortage crisis, which could lead to the collapse of basic services in the Strip.

In a press statement, the Union indicated that the irregular supply of fuel from some international sources has directly exacerbated the crisis and affected the municipalities’ ability to perform their daily tasks, according to the “Palestine Online” website.

It explained that the diesel shortage directly impacts the lives of citizens and displaced persons, threatening to halt road clearing, debris removal, and the elimination of health hazards, in addition to hindering the operation of vital facilities and the continuation of winter emergency operations.

It pointed out that the continued fuel shortage puts more than two million people at risk of a health and environmental catastrophe, stressing that the crisis affects the daily lives and dignity of residents in all governorates of the Strip.

It affirmed that the municipalities have exhausted all their operational and financial resources and are unable to continue providing their services without urgent intervention to provide the necessary fuel.

The union called on the responsible authorities and international bodies to intervene immediately to save the situation before it is too late, warning of serious repercussions if the delay in addressing the crisis continues.
