Gaza Suffocates Under Siege: Imminent Collapse of Services and Crimes Exacerbate the Disaster
The Gaza Strip is experiencing one of its most perilous humanitarian crises, under a suffocating Israeli siege that prevents the entry of fuel and essential supplies, leaving more than two million people under the weight of compounded crises that are rapidly escalating toward explosion. Between the collapse of basic services, the rise in daily crimes despite the “truce,” and the shocking death toll, the outlines of a comprehensive catastrophe are emerging, threatening life in every aspect of life in the besieged territory.
Imminent Collapse of Services
Gaza Strip municipalities have warned of a complete collapse of the services system as a result of the continued ban on the entry of fuel, heavy equipment, and spare parts, leading to a near-total paralysis of vital facilities. The head of the Union of Municipalities, Yahya al-Sarraj, confirmed that municipalities are no longer able to operate water wells and sewage treatment plants due to a severe fuel shortage and the destruction of approximately 85% of their equipment during the aggression. Waste collection, including medical waste, has also ceased, foreshadowing a serious environmental disaster.
According to the data, residents receive only about 40% of their water needs, with expectations of further deterioration during the summer months, given the severe rationing that can reach as little as once every few days.
A deliberate strangulation of life
Data indicates that the amount of fuel allowed in does not exceed 14% of the actual need, despite the stipulation that hundreds of trucks should enter daily, a commitment that has not been honored. Furthermore, the enemy continues to prevent the entry of heavy equipment necessary for clearing rubble and reopening roads, at a time when approximately 90% of the infrastructure and more than 106,000 housing units have been destroyed, in addition to widespread damage to water and electricity networks.
A Health Catastrophe
The cessation of essential services has led to the accumulation of garbage and a widespread infestation of rodents and insects. In the health sector, the Director General of the Ministry of Health in Gaza, Munir al-Barsh, warned of the imminent collapse of the health system, emphasizing that hospitals lack the fuel necessary to operate vital departments, including neonatal intensive care units. Al-Barsh criticized the nature of the aid entering the Strip, describing it as “mocking,” as it includes non-essential items while preventing the entry of fuel, which is the lifeblood of hospitals.
Ongoing Crimes
On the ground, the Zionist enemy continues its daily violations of the ceasefire agreement through aerial and artillery bombardment, gunfire, and the demolition of civilian homes in several areas. These violations have resulted in a continuous stream of martyrs and wounded, while ambulance and civil defense teams are unable to reach many martyrs trapped under the rubble.
Shocking Figures
Statistics indicate that the number of martyrs in the aggression against Gaza has risen to more than 72,000, in addition to more than 172,000 wounded since October 2023, the majority of whom are children and women. Thousands more martyrs remain under the rubble, with no means available to recover them, reflecting the scale of this unprecedented humanitarian tragedy.
Childhood in the Crosshairs
In one of the most heartbreaking scenes, the child Ritaj Rihan was martyred inside a classroom in Beit Lahia, after being struck by a bullet fired by enemy soldiers while holding her notebook and trying to continue her studies. This incident encapsulates the reality of childhood in Gaza, where neither schools nor displacement camps are safe havens, given the continued direct targeting of civilians.
An open catastrophe
Under the continued siege and Zionist violations, the situation in the Gaza Strip is heading towards further deterioration, with a rapid collapse in basic services and an exacerbation of health and environmental crises. Hundreds of thousands of civilians are living a harsh reality in light of a severe shortage of the necessities of life, and the continued aggression deepens the suffering day after day, which puts the Strip in front of an escalating humanitarian catastrophe with no end in sight.
