Gaza: A Worsening Humanitarian Catastrophe Under Siege and Aggression

The catastrophic humanitarian situation in the Gaza Strip continues to worsen under the ongoing Israeli aggression and suffocating siege. The health, environmental, and basic services sectors are rapidly collapsing, exacerbating the suffering of hundreds of thousands of displaced people who face disease, hunger, and thirst in unprecedented conditions.

With escalating warnings, Gaza appears to be facing one of its most perilous humanitarian phases, where health, environmental, and living crises converge, revealing the scale of the disaster endured by more than two million Palestinians under siege and constant attack.

A Bloody Toll and Ongoing Aggression

In its latest statistics, the Palestinian Ministry of Health announced that the death toll from the Israeli aggression has risen to 72,737 martyrs, in addition to more than 172,000 injuries since October 7, 2023. The Ministry confirmed that thousands of martyrs remain under the rubble and in the streets, as ambulance and civil defense teams are unable to reach them.

The Israeli enemy continues its violations of the ceasefire agreement, with daily attacks on infrastructure exacerbating the humanitarian catastrophe and undermining any efforts to contain the crisis.

Gaza Without Water

In one of the most serious crises, the Gaza Municipality warned of an unprecedented worsening of the water crisis, confirming that the gap between actual needs and available water has exceeded 50 percent. This is a result of the widespread destruction of infrastructure and the targeting of water wells and pumping networks.

The municipality spokesperson explained that 72 out of 86 wells have been rendered inoperable due to the aggression, coinciding with power outages, fuel shortages, and the prevention of maintenance equipment from entering Gaza. This has led to a near-total paralysis of the water and sanitation system.

UN reports have also confirmed that approximately 90 percent of the water and sanitation infrastructure has been destroyed or damaged, while fears are growing of the spread of epidemics and infectious diseases within the overcrowded displacement camps.

Rodents and Epidemics: A Growing Threat

In the same context, the Gaza Water Authority issued an urgent appeal to address what it described as a “triangle of danger”: the spread of rodents, the collapse of sewage networks, and the paralysis of the medical system.

Field reports confirmed that more than 70 percent of children in some displacement camps are suffering from skin infections and ulcers due to the polluted environment. Rats and mice have begun to spread alarmingly within the camps, amid warnings of the potential outbreak of serious epidemics.

For its part, UNRWA warned of the increasing health risks among the population, emphasizing that the ongoing displacement, overcrowding in tents, and the lack of clean water are all factors pushing towards a widespread health catastrophe.

A Sector on the Brink of Collapse
Amid this reality, the health sector crisis is rapidly worsening. The Ministry of Health in Gaza confirmed that more than 50 percent of essential medicines and 40 percent of emergency medicines are unavailable, in addition to a severe shortage of medical supplies and laboratory testing materials.

The director of Al-Shifa Hospital, Muhammad Abu Salmiya, indicated that more than 10,000 wounded individuals require advanced surgical procedures that cannot be performed within the Gaza Strip due to a shortage of medical equipment and necessary devices. He warned that the continued siege will lead to an increase in deaths and serious complications among the wounded and sick.

Aid in the Grip of the Enemy
Amid the humanitarian crisis, the government’s emergency committee in Gaza confirmed that the Israeli enemy continues to exert complete control over the entry of humanitarian aid through the crossings. The committee stressed its rejection of any exploitation of aid for personal gain or other interests.

The committee explained that government agencies are continuing to monitor the entry of trucks and address any violations according to legal procedures, despite the exceptional circumstances in the Gaza Strip. It affirmed that the enemy bears full responsibility for obstructing the flow of aid and imposing restrictions on basic needs.

Global Solidarity to Break the Siege
Internationally, Istanbul, Turkey, witnessed solidarity events in support of the Global Freedom Flotilla, which aims to break the siege imposed on Gaza. Hundreds of activists participated in a bicycle tour in support of the humanitarian convoy.

The participants stressed that the continued siege and aggression necessitate broad popular and international action to pressure for an end to the escalating humanitarian tragedy in the Gaza Strip.

Gaza: An Ongoing Suffering
The rapidly unfolding events in Gaza reflect the scale of the humanitarian catastrophe the Strip is experiencing under the ongoing aggression and siege, amidst the collapse of basic services and escalating health and environmental risks. Meanwhile, warnings continue of even more dire consequences if the crossings remain closed and the entry of aid, medical supplies, and humanitarian assistance is prevented.
