Al-Jazeera Reveals Details of Secret Prisons Under UAE Supervision in Yemen

Sam Organization for Rights and Freedom, based in Geneva, has uncovered secret prisons in the cities of Aden, Mukalla, Socotra and Hadramout in Southern Yemen, which are run outside the law by military formations outside the control of the Yemeni authority.

In the report, the organization said that secret prisons have become a serious phenomenon in Yemen, especially in areas controlled by what it called the legitimate government- especially the provinces of Aden and Hadramout- away from the supervision and control of the judiciary.

These camps are run by military formations, including the security belt forces in Aden and urban Elite Forces in Mukalla, which are directly under the supervision of the United Arab Emirates, a member of the Arab Coalition for Yemen.

It confirmed that the detainees in these secret prisons are subjected to various types of physical and psychological torture, and deprived of the basic rights guaranteed by the Yemeni Constitution and international laws.

The organization said that the arrest of the accused are carried out without orders and directly ordered by those supervising the elite forces of Hadramiya, which operate outside the control of the local authority and its decisions are independent.

Official monitoring human rights, Tawfiq al-Humaidi that his organization has all the documents and evidence to prove the report, stressing that the accusation of these forces based on evidence and facts documented by field monitoring teams of the human rights organization.

The organization has documented eight detention centers including Khor Muksar detention camp, 20th Camp I the Krieter region near temporary headquarters, detention camp of Brega region, Abul Yamamah camp  etc.

The most important of these detention centers is al-Rayyan detention center, which is located inside al-Rayyan Airport and is one of the most famous illegal detention centers, the detention center of al-Daba port, the Rabwa prison in Mukalla district, the republican Palace detention center, the Ghail ben Yameen detention center and the island of Socotra.
