Gaza Out of the World’s Focus: Children Under the Rubble and a Collapsing Humanitarian Crisis

While the world’s attention is focused on escalating regional tensions, Gaza is relegated to the margins of the international scene, despite the continuation of one of the most complex humanitarian crises of our time. The Strip, ravaged by Israeli aggression, continues to suffer under bombardment, siege, and the collapse of basic services. Day after day, the chapters of a humanitarian tragedy unfold, affecting every aspect of life, most notably the fate of thousands of children.

Victims Among the Rubble and the Unknown

The harsh reality is revealed in the figures released by human rights organizations. Thousands of children remain missing, some buried under the rubble of destroyed homes, others having vanished under mysterious circumstances. According to field reports, thousands of children are estimated to be trapped under the rubble, as rescue teams are unable to reach them due to the ongoing aggression and the difficulty of operating in devastated and dangerous areas.

Reports also indicate cases of enforced disappearance, particularly in areas under the control of the Israeli occupation forces, raising serious questions about the fate of these children. The tragedy doesn’t end with the loss of life; it extends to grave violations against children who have been detained, with no transparency whatsoever regarding their conditions or whereabouts.

Figures Reveal the Scale of the Catastrophe: During more than two years of Israeli aggression, Gaza has become an open field of immense human losses, with the number of martyrs exceeding tens of thousands, a large percentage of whom are children. Tens of thousands of children suffer from serious injuries, including permanent disabilities, while thousands more face the risk of death due to lack of food and healthcare. The destruction of most medical facilities has led to a near-total paralysis of the health sector, severely limiting access to treatment.

Meanwhile, hundreds of thousands of children live in a state of continuous displacement within camps that lack the most basic necessities, amidst daily dangers including hunger, disease, and the deadly remnants of the aggression.

UNRWA on the Brink of Collapse

This catastrophe coincides with a dangerous decline in the ability of humanitarian organizations to respond. The United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) is facing a severe financial crisis, forcing it to reduce its essential services. This decline is not limited to a lack of funding, but is also linked to political pressure and field restrictions imposed by the Israeli entity, which limit the agency’s ability to deliver aid, especially to the Gaza Strip, which is already suffering under a suffocating siege. Furthermore, the agency’s facilities and staff have been targeted, further complicating its work at a time when millions of Palestinians depend on its services for food, education, and healthcare.

Ongoing Violations
Despite the ceasefire announcement, Gaza continues to witness daily violations by the Israeli entity, ranging from shelling to gunfire, resulting in new casualties, including civilians and people with disabilities. Data confirms that these violations have not ceased but have become part of the daily reality, in the absence of any effective mechanisms to enforce adherence to the agreement or protect the population.

Thousands of victims remain trapped under the rubble, with rescue teams unable to reach them, further complicating the humanitarian situation.

A Dangerous Situation
Amid regional escalation, the United Nations warns that Gaza is no longer a top international priority, despite the dire humanitarian situation there. This decline in international focus directly impacts the scale of the humanitarian response and threatens to exacerbate the crisis, given the continued restrictions on aid entry and the difficulty of accessing large areas of the Gaza Strip. UN reports also confirm that the majority of the population remains displaced and is living in harsh conditions, while only a limited number of health facilities are operational, and even then, only at partial capacity.

A protracted tragedy
What Gaza is experiencing today is no longer just an emergency crisis, but a complex humanitarian reality fueled by the continuation of the Zionist aggression, the siege, and the decline in international attention. Between thousands of missing children, an exhausted health system, and a relief sector facing increasing restrictions, Gaza appears to be facing an even more complex stage, in the absence of real solutions or international action capable of stopping this course. In this scenario, the lives of civilians, especially children, remain hostage to a harsh reality that is renewed daily, without a clear horizon for its end.
