Prior to the dispute between the UAE forces and Ben Dagher government, loyal to Saudi Arabia, on the contrlling of Socotra island, Ben Dagher government complained officially to the Security Council, where it acknowledged the presence of the Emirates on Socotra as unjustified.

The UAE replied to the complaint by a letter to the Security Council, which revealed that it has been in Socotra since 2012 with the consent of the fugitive President Hadi and his government.

“The UAE presence in the archipelago, precedes the conflict in Yemen – started in 2012 following the devastation caused by Cyclone Megh – mainly helping Socotra residents for humanitarian purposes. And it was in coordination with Hadi government,” the letter said.

Thus, it is clear that Hadi’s step, although the presence of the UAE came with his approval, indicates that there is a regional dynamics which might be Saudi Arabia.
