On Tuesday around noon, a humongous explosion occurred just west of Daraa city after a rebel-held storage place containing homemade bombs and so-called ‘hell cannons’ was set alight under mysterious circumstances.

The targeted location was the Air Defense Base, a rebel fortification that was attacked and briefly captured by government troops a couple of weeks ago, only to be retaken hours later.

According to sources, the blast was so loud that it could be heard and seen across the border in Jordan, many kilometers south of the site.

Initial reports indicate at least 7 members of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) were killed on the spot while more than 30 were rushed to makeshift hospitals after sustaining wounds due to the explosion. The death toll may grow in the coming hours.

The targeted FSA group is known as the ‘Jihad Misalmeh’ group while the perpetrators are believe to be linked to the Mukhabarat (Syrian intelligence apparatus).
